When thinking of replacing Google Analytics products, many people will think of Piwik, Piwik Pro and Matomo, so what is the relationship between them?
Piwik
Piwik is an open source WEB traffic analysis system based on Php+MySQL. It was released by Matthieu Aubry in 2007. It is comparable to Google Analytics and has always been the first choice to replace Google Analytics.
Matomo and Piwik Pro both originated from Piwik and are currently commercially operated by two different entities. Matomo is open source and Piwik PRO is non-open source.
Piwik Pro
In September 2013, Matthieu Aubry (the founder of Piwik) and Clearcode CEO Maciej Zawadziński established Piwik PRO in Poland, which initially provided technical support for the open source Piwik.
In June 2016, Clearcode acquired Matthieu Aubry’s shares and became the sole owner of Piwik PRO. Later, it launched its own analysis tool Piwik PRO based on Piwik, which is not open source.
In 2017, Piwik PRO raised US$2 million in Series A financing.
Piwik PRO is available in two versions:
- Piwik PRO Core, free version, which is a SAAS type. It uses a data center in Germany. The monthly event limit is 5 million (the data center is overseas and is not suitable for websites targeting Chinese users).
- Piwik PRO Enterprise, paid version, which supports SAAS and private. The private version supports Azure. For users in China, they can only choose the private Azure Chinese data center.
Piwik PRO has become one of the most popular alternatives to Google Analytics due to its privacy protection.
Matomo
In order to distinguish it from Piwik Pro, in January 2018, Piwik officially changed its name to Matomo, so the orthodoxy of Piwik is Matomo, and Matomo also launched some paid features, providing permanent free local installation and advanced cloud plans.
As of July 2022, over one million websites use Matomo, accounting for more than 2% of all known traffic analysis tool websites and 6% of the top 10,000 websites worldwide. (Information from Wikipedia)
